AFCA is a pan-African alliance that strengthens information integrity by helping newsrooms and watchdog groups build sustainable fact-checking operations. The member-driven network, supported by Code for Africa, brings together 167 newsrooms in 21 countries as a “self-help” community of desks that share skills, collaborate on debunks and seed new projects. AFCA’s core work is capacity building: it incubates in-house CheckDesks, provides seed grants and tools, and pairs members with editors and investigators from PesaCheck and the iLAB for one-on-one mentoring. The alliance also runs fellowships and roundtables, with practical training delivered in major African and international languages, including Amharic, Arabic, English, French, Kiswahili, Oromo and Tigrinya. In 2025, AFCA launched seven-month incubations for outlets in Ivory Coast and Senegal with support from the European Union and GIZ, and offered six-month fellowships for Southern African journalists funded by Norway’s foreign ministry. Earlier programmes in Somalia required applicants to be AFCA members before receiving grants to set up or strengthen CheckDesks. The approach delivers tangible results: partners such as MISA Lesotho used an AFCA fellowship to establish a public tipline‑driven fact-checking desk in 2025. Through this model, AFCA grows local verification capacity, encourages cross-border collaboration, and helps audiences and platforms push back against harmful falsehoods.
