AFRICA ECO NEWS is a pioneering environmental and climate change news platform that provides in-depth coverage of the pressing issues shaping Africa’s environmental landscape. It is one among several news websites owned by EYEWITNESS MEDIA GROUP. They include EYEWITNESS AFRICA and DAILY REPORTER among others
While the company was officially registered in 2023, some of the publications have been operation since 2017.
Our mission is to inform, educate, and drive reforms by highlighting key stories related to environmental degradation, climate change, biodiversity loss, deforestation, pollution, and wildlife protection. Through our investigative journalism, we bring attention to the most critical global and regional environmental challenges, offering a voice to those most affected and advocating for sustainable solutions.
The website covers a broad spectrum of environmental issues, including the deterioration of vital ecosystems such as mangrove forests and glaciers, illegal wildlife poaching and trafficking, deforestation, pollution, and the global climate crisis. Our content is aimed at raising public awareness and sparking action, with a focus on stories that not only reveal the depth of these problems but also explore innovative solutions and the role of policy in environmental preservation.
Our commitment to high-quality, impactful journalism has been recognised through numerous prestigious awards. Notably, AFRICA ECO NEWS and its sister publications have won multiple accolades, including the 2018 runner-up Prince Albert II of Monaco and UNCA Global Prize for outstanding coverage of climate change. A standout series by investigative reporter Patrick Mayoyo, which raised alarm over the environmental and health hazards of a planned coal plant in Lamu, played a key role in earning this distinction. Mayoyo’s reports highlighted how coal, as a fossil fuel, contributes to global warming by producing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. These emissions exacerbate climate change, resulting in catastrophic effects such as droughts, floods, food insecurity, and water scarcity.
In 2021, AFRICA ECO NEWS and DAILY REPORTER were honoured with the gold prize for the same award, recognising Mayoyo’s comprehensive investigation into the role of carbon credits and indigenous knowledge in combating climate change. His work also explored the environmental impact of shifting tectonic plates in Kenya’s Rift Valley, illustrating how these natural processes are linked to rising water levels in local lakes. His reporting is widely respected for blending vivid on-the-ground observations with scientific data and UN reports to deliver impactful stories that resonate globally.
In 2022, our coverage won the prestigious US National Academies, Edirc and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communication. These awards recognised the breadth and depth of AFRICA ECO NEWS’ reporting on critical climate issues, including the innovative use of carbon credits in Kenyan villages and the adaptation of local communities to climate change through sustainable practices such as mushroom farming.
Through our award-winning journalism, AFRICA ECO NEWS continues to lead the way in science communication, delivering essential stories that inform, inspire, and drive change on both the local and global stages.
