The media outlet is published by a journalism cooperative called De Werktitel. The founders launched the project in 2008 after being laid off from their positions at the newspaper De Morgen. A small team of journalists and administrative staff make Apache possible.
Apache highlights that its "journalists are not under commercial pressure from advertisers and can write freely on all subjects". The media outlet is advert-free and relies on subscriptions to the website, a quarterly magazine, and other funds.
In 2019, Apache released a video from an investigation about businessman Erik Van der Paal, and the organisation received a SLAPP case (Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation). In 2021, the court ruled that Apache had remained within the limits of its press freedom rights.
The media outlet has received many different awards throughout the years. In 2022, it won the Prize for Democracy, an award existing since 1992. The same year, it won the European Press Prize 2022, the highest European journalism award, with the cross-border research Cities for Rent.
Apache works with a network of domestic and foreign news media to give its audience more context and information about relevant stories: "We take over their best pieces or collaborate on investigations. This way, you get to read even more excellent research and critical analyses," the organisation states.
