Quatro Cinco Um publishes the content produced by the editorial staff and external collaborators in different formats: monthly print edition, website, podcasts, newsletters and book clubs. They publish reviews, reports, interviews, notes, images and other content produced with journalistic independence about books recently published in Brazil in more than 20 areas, based on independence, pluralism, bibliodiversity and the free circulation of ideas.
They believe in books as an object of individual and collective transformation, based on the principle that there is no democratic society without a wide circulation of books. The magazine was launched in May 2017, with Fernanda Diamant and Paulo Werneck as editors. Since 2019, Quatro Cinco Um Association has had journalists Paulo Werneck and Humberto Werneck as its directors.
In 2018, Quatro Cinco Um received the IPL Retratos da Leitura award from the Pró-Livro Institute in the Media category. In 2019, 451 MHz was launched, the first podcast exclusively about books in the Brazilian professional press, in an interview format, published twice a month, and a finalist for the 2020 Jabuti Prize.
In 2020, Quatro Cinco Um published the podcast Vinte Mil Léguas, about the literary and scientific paths taken by Charles Darwin in The Origin of Species, with the support of the Serrapilheira Institute and in partnership with Livraria Megafauna. Quatro Cinco Um's main source of funding is income from subscriptions and sales at newsstands and bookstores. Advertisements from the publishing market, support from third sector institutions for relevant coverage, projects about books and reading, partnerships and private donations complete the budget.
