Bioneer is Estonia's only media outlet focusing on sustainability and green living. It defines itself as a citizen media organisation aiming to produce exciting content and educate readers. "It's very easy: our priority is clarity, because no one bothers to read about topics they don't understand,” says Bioneer's editor-in-chief Katrin Jõgisaar.

As Estonia is becoming more conscious about sustainable living, Bioneer's staff hopes more people will find a way to the site, too; the goal is to be Estonians' first choice for environmental media.

According to Jõgisaar, Bioneer was founded in 2008 to create an independent and apolitical space where people could read about green living in Estonia and abroad. "Estonia didn't have a site like that," she says.

Its mission is to educate readers; therefore, it's determined to keep its information free for everyone. This is also one of the reasons why Bioneer currently relies solely on volunteer writers who are passionate about changing the world one word at a time.

Bioneer is part of the non-profit organisation Ökotark MTÜ, which provides training sessions to educate people on sustainability as well as issues such as diversity and disability barriers. The revenue from training sessions covers the costs of Bioneer.
