Blue Radio is an online audiovisual station based in Mombasa, Kenya, operated by Gilitics Media. Launched in September 2022 after a June soft launch, it was built to connect coastal youth with opportunities in the blue economy and to promote marine conservation. The station produces news, talk shows, features and podcasts that translate ocean, climate and coastal policy into everyday stories. Through partnerships with civil society and researchers, it provides a platform for communities along the coast to be heard. A 2024 memorandum of understanding with Media for Nature led to a weekly program, Wimbi la Mazingira, which brings scientists, fishers and local leaders into sustained on-air conversations about sustainable fishing, climate adaptation and coastal livelihoods. Blue Radio also reports on innovation and civic issues shaping the region, from Pwani Innovation Week to local governance and human rights, and often recruits presenters from the surrounding creative scene to keep programming rooted in community life. While fully digital, the station pairs audio with video segments and social formats to reach audiences on phones and across social platforms. By focusing its editorial agenda on the blue economy and youth agency, Blue Radio has carved out a distinct role in Kenya’s media landscape: a Mombasa-based newsroom and studio telling coastal stories with local voices.
