Four women journalists founded Cajueira in 2020 out of a shared dissatisfaction with the way the Northeast was covered in the Rio-São Paulo press. The aim of creating the newsletter, a format that gave rise, without ceasing to exist, to a website, was to value the production of Northeastern and independent journalists.

Cajueira's mission is to promote and connect independent journalism in the Northeast. Over time, the founders realized that they also needed to fight for regional diversity in the press, in order to combat the commonplace message about the northeastern region conveyed by the press that "calls itself national, but is basically from the southeast," says co-founder Nayara Felizardo.

With Cajueira, the aim is to show Brazil that the Northeast is not the stereotypical image of "misery, the ground cracked by drought, the bodies slaughtered by hunger", but a diverse territory that is also richly covered by different media outlets.
