Its main mission is to communicate science, technology, humanities and innovation in a precise, rigorous and responsible manner. It is committed to a review of the information and news it disseminates, to encourage debate about the place and importance of the science and technology system for the countries of Latin America.

In addition, several scientists and disseminators from other countries collaborate for this digital portal, such as: Argentina, Peru, Germany, the United States, Spain and the United Kingdom.

It has several recognitions.

The National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), during the celebration of its 20 years of institutional life, awarded two scientific communicators from Ciencia del Sur for their work in disseminating science, technology and innovation. Eduardo Quintana, executive director of the medium, received the Science Journalist Award in 2017, while Ariel Insaurralde Alviso, natural sciences editor, received recognition for his support and contribution to dissemination.

In 2018 they won Second Place, in the "Best Photography" category, of the Second Edition of the Pablo Medina Award for Environmental Journalism, organized by the Forum of Paraguayan Journalists (FOPEP) and the Law Institute and Environmental Economics (IDEA).

In 2024, he received the National Award for Scientific Communication and Dissemination, from CONACYT. For a report.

He also achieved other awards, recognitions and scholarships.
