The Comunidade Cultura e Arte started as a Facebook page on which Rui André Soares, with no journalism background, shared musings about all the movies he watched. People showed interest, and he decided to launch a website.
"I never thought about an editorial or commercial strategy. I just wanted to share my cultural habits. I am still doing that, but now I pay greater attention to what the Comunidade Cultura e Arte can offer that other websites can't," Rui André Soares, its founder, says.
In 2022, its founder registered the website with the Portuguese press regulator entity.
The media outlet aims to democratise culture and the arts. That often translates into letting people know about an exhibition that will happen outside the mainstream circuit or calling people's attention to a TV channel that will soon premiere an indie series.
It emphasises artistic and cultural events in Portugal that tell stories about mental health or housing issues. According to André, those topics are of significant interest to the community of readers. It primarily covers cultural and artistic events happening in Portugal, but the scope of its attention and interest is international.
The website reaches 2.8 million unique users a year. Most of its funding comes from advertising and memberships through Patreon.
