El Búho is a digital media from the Arequipa region, located in southern Peru. Publish content about politics and culture. Its director, Mabel Cáceres, founded this medium as a printed magazine in March 2000. As a consequence of the great impact of technology on the press, El Búho became a digital platform in 2014 and its news coverage had a great impact on the municipal and regional elections of that year.
According to its founder, this medium is “a collective of journalists and intellectuals who challenge indifference and conformism.”
Mabel Cáceres has faced no less of 13 lawsuits in recent years for their investigations, which would be a record in Latin America. The Institute of Press and Society (IPYS) has committed itself to the legal defense of El Búho because the lawsuits against its director have been considered attacks on press freedom and democracy.
