Ensemble is a digital magazine, started by Zoe Walker Ahwa and Rebecca Wadey in August 2020. It was established via key content partnerships with leaders in the fashion industry as well as media organisations, The Spinoff and Viva, a weekly insert magazine inside national newspaper New Zealand Herald. Walker Ahwa is the former editor of Fashion Quarterly, associate editor of national newspaper, New Zealand Herald's insert magazine Viva, and style editor at Stuff. Wadey has two decades of experience working in fashion, wellness and beauty publishing and marketing. In 2020, they started their own independent platform, which they describe as being a place for people to read about world issues as much as they do beautiful well-made clothing. Ensemble covers off fashion, personal style, beauty, wellbeing, women's health, pop culture as well as well-known people within those spaces - actors, comedians, artists etc who are having an impact on the world. Their guiding ethos is 'for both intelligence and whimsy'. In 2021, one year after launch, Ensemble was bought by Stuff, before being bought back by its owners, Walker Ahwa and Wadey, in 2024. Ensemble has also won a number of awards, including best digital brand at the Magazine Publisher Association Awards in 2020 and 2021 as well as the Best Brand Event MPA in 2021, and a silver placement at the INMA awards in New York. As well as their website, Ensemble is active across a number of other channels, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and Spotify where it creates and shares music playlists. The team send out a weekly newsletter via Substack and also runs a schedule of events, including film previews and exclusive premieres. It has a membership structure which allows people access to subscriber only content and newsletters, the ability to post comments and join its online community as well as free attendance at some of its events. Free subscribers get access to the weekly newsletter.
