Founded in 2019, Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) is a media and advocacy non-governmental organisation focused on human rights issues in Ghana and across Africa. The organisation works at the intersection of journalism, advocacy, civic education, and legal support, with particular attention to vulnerable and marginalised populations.
HRRG’s work centres on documenting human rights violations, increasing public awareness, supporting access to justice, and contributing to policy and institutional reform. Its activities include investigative journalism, community-based education, advocacy campaigns, stakeholder engagement, and legal assistance. Through these approaches, the organisation seeks to strengthen accountability, promote human dignity, and support systemic change.
The organisation was established by a collective of journalists, editors, lawyers, human rights advocates, and social activists responding to increasing human rights challenges in Ghana and beyond. This multidisciplinary foundation continues to shape HRRG’s approach, combining evidence-based reporting with grassroots engagement and legal intervention.
A core programme of HRRG is the KTT Project, a nationwide sensitisation campaign launched in 2019 to address kidnapping, teenage pregnancy, and tramadol and drug abuse among young people. The project focuses on direct outreach, public education, and community engagement, and has reached more than 60,000 students, educators, parents, and community members across three regions in Ghana. The project received the 5th UN Global Entreps Award, presented by Entreps in collaboration with the UN75 initiative.
HRRG is led by Dr. Joseph Kobla Wemakor, its Founder and Executive Director. Under his leadership, the organisation has participated in national and international human rights initiatives, including contributions to the World Bank’s EQOSOGI Report (Second Edition). Dr. Wemakor has received several recognitions related to human rights advocacy, peacebuilding, and media work, including awards and fellowships from regional and international institutions.
In addition to his role at HRRG, Dr. Wemakor has been involved in global media and human rights networks, including the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa Fellowship and the Fortifying the Truth fellowship with WITNESS. His work has been recognised in professional and academic contexts, including earlier awards for journalism and social development reporting.
HRRG operates under the guiding principle: “A society for all without discrimination.”
