Crónico is a digital media outlet born out of the restlessness felt by five young people for not knowing where to read about the issues that most worried them: politics, youth unemployment, housing, and precariousness.
"In traditional media, we only hear from either young people from Lisbon and Porto - not from other cities in Portugal or the diaspora communities - or from old men commentating about our future," one of its co-founders, Madalena Freire, says.
Currently, a team of more than 70 people joined those five friends and founders, all contributing to the website pro-bono. These young writers and illustrators have different career backgrounds, from economics and biology to art and communications, and come from all sides of the political spectrum.
"We are restless about the need to be represented. We feel it's almost a chronic disease, and we need our voice to be heard," Freire says, explaining the name Crónico.
The team is now relaunching the website, reducing the number of articles and focusing on longer, more in-depth pieces.
Crónico has generated some attention on social media but hasn't been able to monetise on those numbers, so it has no source of revenue other than the team's investment.
