La Region (www.laregion.bo) is the first media specialized in the environment, indigenous communities and responsible tourism in Bolivia.
In 2009, journalist Doly Leytón Arnez began a personal trip through some protected areas in Bolivia. On the tours, she was impressed by the natural beauty of the country and, at the same time, she became aware of the environmental problems faced by these reserved territories.
At the same time, she realized that the indigenous communities had ecotourism projects that failed due to lack of promotion or dissemination. Therefore, over the next two years, Doly decided to immerse himself in this way of traveling that respects the environment and promotes the development of local communities. Through this experience, he was able to better understand the importance of conservation, sustainability, and the contribution of indigenous peoples to these processes.
Later, in 2012, with that motivation, new awareness and perspective, he founded La Región, the first native digital media in Bolivia specialized in the environment, indigenous communities and ecotourism.
For seven years, the media managed to position itself and establish an editorial line that until then did not have a specific focus in the country. For this reason, in 2019, the arrival of fellow journalist Rocío Lloret Céspedes allowed us to deepen that base and provide greater quality and usefulness of the content.
The work team that has been formed between Rocío and Doly has turned La Región into a reference in the coverage of environmental and ecotourism issues in Bolivia. The outlet has published investigations on deforestation, pollution, forest fires, climate change, as well as stories about indigenous communities and sustainable development.
The Region has had a positive impact on Bolivian society and its work has contributed to the protection of the environment and the development of local communities. In the same way, it has inspired other journalists to cover the topic.
