Le Média citoyen is an Ivorian non-profit newsroom launched in 2019 by a group of twelve journalists, activists, teachers and students led by journalist‑blogger Nesmon De Laure. It concentrates 95% of its coverage on Ivory Coast and prioritizes stories from civil society that mainstream outlets overlook. Its editorial work blends analysis, on-the-ground reporting, fact‑checking and investigations across politics, society, human rights, gender, governance, the economy and sustainable development. The outlet is published by the Abidjan-based NGO Opinion Éclairée and operates with a social‑and‑solidarity model: contributors are volunteer journalists and citizen reporters, remote‑first, with funding from the NGO’s members and partners. Le Média citoyen has logged nearly 600,000 visitors, 6,000 Facebook followers, and a citizen club that animates debates and distribution networks including WhatsApp groups. The newsroom was named Ivory Coast’s Best Community Media at the 2020 Awards of the Digital Press, while founder Nesmon De Laure received the top prize for Best Women’s Initiative in Web Media. Its journalists have also been recognized by the CAIDP awards for promoting access to information, and the outlet earned a nomination at the African Fact‑Checking Awards. In 2025, it joined the “Anti Dohi” coalition led by Africa Check to safeguard information integrity during the presidential election, producing coordinated fact‑checks and educational content. Cross‑border collaborations, such as reporting with Ouestaf News, extend its reach on regional issues.
