Yerba is a variant of the feminine name herb, which is used to name plants with tender stems, according to the Royal Spanish Academy. The Herbarium of the Public University of Navarra defines bad weed as “a plant that grows in a place where it is not wanted to grow.” In nature, weeds are resistant species that grow in difficult climates and ecosystems. And although some have benefits for human health, they are eliminated every time they sprout in gardens and crops, because they are considered bad.
As in nature, in today's reality, MalaYerba is that kind of unwanted journalism, which reveals environmental destruction, social inequalities and corruption related to the dispossession and change of land use. That journalism that the economic and political elites have silenced in the media spaces, selling that silence in the form of "development".
In these hostile ecosystems, MalaYerba was born: a production company of journalistic projects specialized in socio-environmental problems in the Central American region. The purpose of which is to contribute to the environmental governance of each country.
Journalism and other herbs
La MalaYerba is an autonomous and free project. Whose priority is to tell stories of human beings facing nature in the era of the Anthropocene and the climate crisis. Transmedia narrative will be the channel to establish an agenda that talks about: environmental democracy, climate conflicts, environmental defenders, renewable energies, environmental legislation, protected areas, threatened species, neocolonialism, environmental predators, megaprojects, water crisis, among other topics of social importance.
La MalaYerba travels through territories looking for characters, scenarios and problems. Promotes environmental journalism with a gender focus, based on investigative and data journalism.
