Média'Pi! is a bilingual media (French Sign Language and French) producing information targeted to deaf minority groups. It publishes news across all the common areas of a general news media: the latest news, politics, culture, education, ecology, society, and health. It is aimed at the deaf or hearing community using sign language, but it is open to everyone else.
This media outlet was founded to fill the lack of access to information for deaf people and to make information on the concerns and interests of the deaf community known to all. Its mission is to report on deaf minority groups' matters, away from the often emotional side attributed to disabilities, and to counter the lack of documented discourses about deafness.
Prior to its creation, there were no informative alternatives for the deaf community. Founder Noémie Churlet previously created Art'Pi! in 2011, a magazine about art and cultural news accessible to the deaf community, but it disappeared in 2017. Another online media outlet providing information in French Sign Language, Websourd, closed in 2015.
After the terrorist attacks in 2015 and 2016, Churlet approached fellow journalists to ensure the deaf community was informed about the situation. The events showed the absolute lack of accessible information to the community, and the need to create a media outlet that addresses deaf people in their language.
