Minority Africa is a digital publication founded in 2019 that reports on Africa’s marginalized communities through data‑driven, multimedia storytelling and a solutions‑journalism lens. Its coverage spans women, sexual and gender minorities, ethnic and religious minorities, persons with disabilities, migrants and refugees, and other groups often left out of mainstream narratives. The newsroom publishes long‑form features, podcasts and newsletters, and releases its work under Creative Commons to encourage free republication and access without paywalls or ads. Built by minorities and for minorities, the outlet works with contributors across the continent.
Beyond publishing, Minority Africa invests in talent pipelines. The six‑month, paid Minority Africa Fellowship, launched in 2022, trains early‑career journalists from under‑represented groups in data, solutions and community‑centered reporting, pairing fellows with mentors and commissioning at least two stories per month. Its Advance initiative functions as a collaborative news agency that partners with African and international outlets to improve coverage of minority communities and syndicate stories across a network of around 300 publishers and academics. The outlet also convenes Border Dialogues, a series that brings audiences into conversations at the margins.
Minority Africa’s approach and growth have been profiled by the International Journalists’ Network; its team members have been interviewed or featured by broadcasters including the BBC and DW. Founder and editor Caleb Okereke, a Nigerian journalist, set up the platform to “unbreak” news about minorities and has spoken widely about inclusive journalism across Africa and beyond.
