NARA (previously named Nanook) is an independent multimedia news outlet managed by a journalist collective founded in 2015. It publishes narrative journalism pieces across text, video, photo, audio, and multimedia in Lithuanian, Russian, and English.
The newsroom focuses on in-depth coverage of politics, society, culture, the environment, and psychology, and produces interviews with Lithuanian personalities across culture, activism, human rights, and politics, among others.
All the information is produced by journalists and media professionals whose work relies on the principles of ethical journalism, research, and respect for interviewees.
Since 2017, NARA's newsroom has produced a podcast called NYLA, which takes the audience through difficult conversations on current social issues in Lithuania and the world.
NARA is also actively involved in teaching and educational activities and promotes responsible journalism.
The organisation has received several nominations and awards since its founding. Its interactive documentary Traces: Traversing the Past tracks the path of the massive deportations of Lithuanians to Siberia during the occupation of the country by the Soviet Union. The documentary was nominated in the Multimedia category of PRIX EUROPA in 2018 and won the Best Spirit of Adventure Film Award at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival in 2019, as well as the What's New in Publishing Award by the New Media Writing Prize in 2019.
In 2022, it was nominated in the Radio Documentary category of the PRIX EUROPA for its podcast episode Witnessing War Twice in Your 20s, where journalists talked with Ukrainians who "experienced war in 2014 and are living through it again in 2022," according to the article that accompanies the podcast.
