During the first lockdown of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, journalists Francesca Mulas and Giacomo Pisano founded a blog about arts and creativity. They called it Nemesis to contrast the gravity of the pandemic with culture.
In a few months, in December 2020, Mulas and Pisano turned the publication into a registered local magazine owned by their cultural association, Terra Atra.
The two founders previously co-directed a cultural fanzine. For years they perceived a vacuum in the regional editorial landscape. Mulas explained: "Local newspapers only pay attention to big cultural events, ignoring a lively scene of artisans and artists." Nemesis Magazine aims to give visibility to this part of society.
The publication primarily relies on the audience's support, with donations collected through online crowdfunding campaigns and events. "We once organised a lottery. The prizes consisted of works donated to us by local artists. All tickets sold out", Mulas recalled. In the future they plan to organise more live events. They would also like to publish in the Sardinian language and produce podcasts and audio articles.
At the moment, the newsroom consists of 10 paid contributors. The two co-founders, Mulas and Pisano, volunteer for the magazine but plan to apply for regional public funds.
The organisation has already gained some acknowledgements, such as being selected as a media partner for a growing number of cultural events.
