News24 is a South African digital news organisation founded in 1998 and owned by Media24, part of the Naspers group. It operates a multi‑city newsroom of more than 100 journalists across Cape Town, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Gqeberha, producing daily coverage of politics, governance, crime, business, sport and culture alongside analysis and opinion. Its investigative team publishes high‑impact projects such as Mashatile Unmasked, a sustained probe into the deputy president’s patronage networks, and the Silenced series on the assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokaran. News24’s journalism has been recognised widely: in 2025 Kyle Cowan was named Journalist of the Year at the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards, and in 2024 he won Vodacom Journalist of the Year, with colleagues also taking the Young Journalist and Innovation in Journalism awards. In August 2020 News24 introduced digital subscriptions, reserving its in‑depth reporting for paying readers; by January 2024 it surpassed 100,000 subscribers, the largest subscription‑led news site in Africa. The brand consistently ranks as South Africa’s most trusted news source in the Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report, reflecting its focus on accuracy and accountability. Beyond text, News24 produces podcasts such as The Lead and visual investigations, and convenes the annual On the Record summit that brings journalists, policy‑makers and business leaders together to debate national priorities.
