On 7 July 2018, Enrico Mentana - one of the most known Italian TV anchormen – posted on Facebook his resolution to launch a new digital-native newspaper.
He explained: "My generation had the opportunity to fulfil the dream of working as a journalist. Younger generations do not because my peers offer them only precarious jobs."
Then he called for applications, primarily addressed to people under 33. In five months Open was set up, and today it reaches over 67 million unique users annually - more than the Italian population.
Its newsroom consists of 15 young journalists who are employed full-time.
Open is a generalist publication covering breaking news and chronicles and focusing on fact-checking. Since 2021, it has been part of the International Fact-checking Network, and has received grants from Meta through the Third-Party Fact-checking Program.
