As a non-profit website, Oštro emphasises the right to information as one of the fundamental human rights. It also spreads journalistic knowledge and helps educate future generations of journalists.

The outlet publishes investigative and data journalism stories on topics of public interest for people in the Adriatic region (Slovenia, Croatia, and Italy), and in the region's neighbouring countries.

Oštro exclusively serves the public interest, and produces journalism that rejects both the agenda set by traditional media, and the false imperative of producing a constant stream of smaller daily stories. Oštro's newsroom follows the principles of the Code of the Croatian Journalists' Association and the Charter of Munich.

Oštro is a non-profit media organisation set up as an institute, which acquires funds through public tenders and funding calls, contributions, and donations. After covering Oštro's operational expenses, any surplus of funds is reinvested into journalism and the centre's development.

Oštro is a partner of the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). It has a sister media outlet, Oštro Slovenia, founded in 2018 in Ljubljana. Both centers were formed out of a realisation that the "space for quality journalism is inexorably shrinking".
