La Perla del Sur is a news organization in southern Puerto Rico, dedicated to serving local communities, promoting accountability, and advocating for the just causes of Puerto Ricans. For over four decades, it has been the custodian of the journalistic legacy of Ponce and the leading medium in the region.
The first edition was published on November 2, 1982, under businessman Juan Nogueras de la Cruz, with continuous printing until June 2022. Initially a biweekly advertising publication with a circulation of 40,000 copies in Ponce, it soon expanded to nearby towns.
The headquarters moved from the founder’s residence in San Antonio, Ponce, to a building between Villa and Muñoz Rivera streets, and later to the Sabanetas Industrial Park. Throughout its evolution, La Perla del Sur reflected southern Puerto Rico's commercial activity and produced impactful investigative reports, earning numerous awards for journalistic excellence.
Due to economic pressures, declining advertising, and the Covid-19 pandemic, La Perla del Sur ceased operations on June 15, 2022. Shortly after, a Ponce collective acquired the brand to rescue its legacy and relaunch it as an advanced electronic medium.
In September 2022, as part of The Urban Media House, La Perla del Sur reemerged digitally, maintaining its journalistic ethics and expanding its thematic offerings with new voices to enhance its reach and influence.
