Přepište dějiny (in English: Rewrite History) was established by Martin Groman, who used to work in Czech public radio as a director of the Dvojka channel, and Michal Stehlík, who used to be on the board of the Council of Czech Radio.
"Michal Stehlík, the deputy director of the National Museum, wrote an open letter to politician Tomio Okamura, who was comparing the EU to the Third Reich. Stehlík offered him and his fellow politicians a semester course in modern history. He proposed to start with the terminology," Martin Groman says.
Both realised that the joke was not enough; the terminology was being misused and misinterpreted, and clearing up these issues would help educate the public.
"Comparing current situations with historical parallels raises emotions in society. It's fuel for populists. Words like 'collaborator', 'nazis' or 'fascists'," Groman explains. The aim of creating the podcast was to reflect on this terminology and those statements and explain what they mean.
The podcast has approximately 1.8 million downloads as of October 2022, and it is available on several podcast platforms, including Anchor, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify.
