Prime Progress is a nonprofit newsroom based in Abuja that pairs accountability reporting with solutions journalism. Founded in March 2021 by journalist Innocent Eteng, it investigates repressive cultural, religious and social practices while documenting how Nigerians and other Africans respond to problems in health, education, governance, the environment, and women’s rights. The digital-first outlet publishes multimedia features, investigations and explainers and has built a predominantly young audience—about 60 percent aged 18–34, with three‑quarters in Nigeria.
Beyond publishing, Prime Progress develops talent and beats. Its Religion for Change fellowship, launched in November 2023 with support from the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture, trains reporters to cover faith-driven responses to social issues and funds story production. In 2024 it announced a Biodiversity Reporting Challenge that combined a two‑day workshop with a ₦220,000 story grant, and it runs campus labs, including a 2024 training at the University of Jos with Nigeria Health Watch.
The outlet participates in the Nigeria Media Innovation Program (MDIF/MacArthur), which has supported growth to an eight‑person full‑time team and product experiments. Its Spotlight franchise monetizes impact storytelling through commissioned projects, including assignments documenting the work of partners such as New Incentives.
By focusing on practical, evidence‑grounded reporting and newsroom training, Prime Progress has carved a niche in Nigeria’s media landscape as a go‑to source for stories of change and the people making them.
