Founded by journalist Alexandra Haderlein, the local digital media outlet aims to counter the increasing centralisation of local information channelled through regional daily newspapers. Relevanzreporter (in English: Relevance Reporters) focuses on topics beyond daily news, allowing its community to become actively engaged in forming the media outlet and motivating joint action.
Initially, the organisation achieved over 13,000 euros from 160 supporters through a crowdfunding campaign in 2021. The platform now finances itself from memberships and grants, though many contributors remain pro-bono. Each investigation and podcast episode costs 800-1,000 euros, and with more than 20 staff members involved, the organisation continuously seeks a more sustainable business model.
Community members are invited to contribute to research, ask questions, share experiences, participate in surveys, and propose solutions and changemakers they know across the region. In addition, the team meets its community in person to continuously define quality journalism based on the audience’s needs.
Its vision is to strengthen democracy at a local and national level by reimagining journalism. Its content is aimed primarily at a younger audience, though not exclusively.
