Scoop is an independent news site that has been publishing since 1999 when it was set up by Alistair Thompson, Ian Llewellyn and Andrew McNaughton. It is owned by a non-profit organisation, Scoop Foundation for Public Interest Journalism, a charitable trust that was set up in 2015. Scoop produces a large range of publicly accessible content across politics, academia, business and health. It has a press release feed that is continually updated with news throughout the day, individuals or organisations can submit their news to the editorial inbox for the opportunity to have it posted on the site. It receives submissions from people all over the world and publishes content in alignment with its terms and conditions. Scoop has introduced what it calls an ethical paywall, which charges a fee for businesses to use Scoop professionally. They can set up a membership with ScoopPro that is tailored to the size of the company and what they need to use. Some of the main benefits to the membership is that it allows easy access to Scoop, the ability to glean insights and data on their work as well as priority access for submissions in the more advanced tiers.
Scoop is monitored by an editorial team, and as such publish a range of voices on a variety of topics. There's a range of sections on the website, including one on Wellington, the Pacific, the Dig, which focuses on innovative solutions for key national issues, and Werewolf which is described as a home for longform journalism on politics, art and culture.
