Son Playas is a portal specialized in environmental journalism with an emphasis on coastal and marine ecosystems that seeks to contribute to the knowledge and care of the natural environment, in addition to promoting informed citizen participation. Its coverage is local, focused mainly on Mazatlán, a coastal municipality of Sinaloa, Mexico. Starting from the local context, global problems linked to pollution, loss of biodiversity and climate change, among others, are addressed.
The journalistic coverage of Son Playas is transversal to the economic, social, cultural, human rights, territorial management and public policies. The way in which the land is managed is relevant on its agenda due to the potential environmental effects and its close connection with vulnerabilities to the impacts of climate change.
In addition to pointing out the problems, Son Playas proposes alternative solutions and possible futures; guides people on how they can contribute to the care of their natural environment and sustainable development. Citizen participation as an agent of change has a marked presence in the content of this independent digital medium.
The first publications of this independent digital medium were made on March 31, 2019. Since then, the project has filled an information gap on environmental matters at the local level.
The public utility and impact of Son Playas has been demonstrated by promoting greater citizen participation, by positioning issues on the public agenda and by being a reference for other media. Likewise, it has contributed to strengthening citizen capacities through exhibitions, conferences, courses and workshops on environmental law, social participation mechanisms, access to public information and journalism.
