Stellenbosch Media Forum

Stellenbosch Media Forum (SMF) is a student‑run newsroom anchored in Stellenbosch University’s Department of Journalism. Produced annually by the BA Honours cohort, SMF today operates as SMF News, a bilingual digital publication serving the Stellenbosch town and university communities. Its reporters file original, on‑the‑ground coverage across local governance, education, community safety, environment, culture and sport—stories that connect campus life with the surrounding Winelands. Editorial work is carried out by the honours class as a capstone newsroom, with line‑editing, fact‑checking and field reporting embedded in the curriculum. The outlet subscribes to the South African Press Council’s Press Code and enforces its own ethics charter emphasising accuracy, clarity, minimising harm, independence and privacy, including an explicit pledge to maintain editorial independence from the university. SMF publishes in English and Afrikaans to reflect the region’s language mix and broaden access for residents as well as students. SMF began in 2002 as an annual magazine created by postgraduate journalists; a decade later the 2012 team released SMF2012, widely reported as South Africa’s first university‑linked news app, signalling an early shift to mobile storytelling. The digital operation continues that tradition, prioritising original reporting over aggregation and covering hyperlocal developments—such as environmental initiatives by wine farms or grassroots sports campaigns—with a civic focus. Through its mix of training and public‑interest reporting, SMF gives early‑career journalists a live newsroom experience while providing the Stellenbosch area with consistent, ethically grounded local news.
