Uhuru Times was conceived in 2007, while I was working in Abeokuta, Ogun State. We had the print edition for a while until my relocation to the United Kingdom in 2009. But it was continued in the UK as Uhuru (magazine) and registered with the Post Office in London, United Kingdom. We published the print edition for a while in the UK before my eventual return to Nigeria as funds to continue became difficult to source.
Africa and indeed the rest of the Third World, currently, do not have a credible media organization through which the world can view them. Uhuru Times aima to be the prism through which the world view Africa and what we do here. The idea came at a time democracy was taking root across many continents in Africa, in particular, Nigeria.
And, we believe that information is the bedrock of any genuine democracy. Democracy presupposes that individuals make informed choices during periodic elections and in-between. What that means is that, without being informed, no individual can make a credible or informed choice. It is our resolve to bridge that gap, which is why we are currently working to revive our print edition. Besides, information is freedom of choice. But when you don't have the correct information you are wont to make the wrong choice, thus the name of our publication, which is Uhuru Times. It simply means, Freedom Times (Uhuru is a Swahili word for freedom in Kenya and other parts of East Africa).
The Western media present Nigeria and Africa through an uninformed prism to the rest of the world. It is our desire to change that.
