Until Everyone Is Free is a Kenya‑based Sheng podcast and radio project that uses the life of Pio Gama Pinto to teach people’s history and the unfinished work of decolonization. Launched in 2020, it is led by host Stoneface Bombaa with reporting by Felix Omondi and, until mid‑2025, producer April Zhu. Across a seven‑part narrative, the team reconstructs Pinto’s roles—Mau Mau ally, land justice advocate, radical journalist, trade unionist, political strategist, and martyr—to ask why state independence did not deliver freedom for ordinary Kenyans. The producers blend archival research with street‑level interviews and music, translate scripts into Sheng, and root the series in communities such as Mathare to build a living popular archive. The project extends that historical lens into contemporary political education. Recent episodes explore the invisible labour behind global AI systems outsourced to Kenyan workers and convene a “Beyond the Bill” teach‑in on police brutality, tying past struggles to present fights. In 2025, Wairimu Gathimba joined the team as the project continued beyond Zhu’s departure. The team has also shared its approach in academic settings, including a Georgetown University Doyle Seminar. Distributed free on major podcast platforms and YouTube, Until Everyone Is Free speaks to audiences in Kenya and the diaspora who want unsanitized narratives about land, labour, media, and state power. Its aim is to make anti‑colonial memory common knowledge and equip listeners with history they can use.
