Wangki Yupurnanupurru

Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio has been part of the Fitzroy Valley community since the late 1980s. Back then, local elders and community members saw the rise of new media technology and decided it was time to create something of their own – a radio station to serve the people of Fitzroy Crossing and the wider Fitzroy Valley. The journey began at the Karrayilli Adult Education Centre, where the community came together to make this dream a reality. They travelled across Australia, lobbying for a station that would share stories, keep languages alive, pass on culture, and bring news and music to the people. By the late '80s, Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio was born. In the early days, Wangki was just a small segment on the ABC Kimberley. The station would switch over to “old man NP” for a few hours before going back to the ABC broadcast. But in the early 1990s, everything changed. Wangki Radio became an incorporated organisation, secured its own AM licence, and began broadcasting full-time on 936 AM. More than 30 years later, Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio is stronger than ever. It broadcasts to over 40 communities across the Fitzroy Valley and connects with listeners regionally and nationally online and through social media. Wangki is run by local staff, making it a station for the people of the Valley, by the people of the Valley. It brings listeners a mix of music – supporting local Kimberley and Indigenous music as a priority but also mixing in country, rock, and reggae with the latest hits, creating a unique and eclectic mix not heard anywhere else in Australia. The team also delivers the latest news, weather, information, and sports, both local and national.
