David Farrier has been a journalist for about two decades, starting with a career in broadcast news in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2006. Over that time, he has created documentaries and broken many stories through his investigative work. In 2020, he started Webworm as a way to continue his investigative work. He runs Webworm via Substack, where he publishes his stories, both written and his podcast, Flightless Bird. Through this platform, he has broken both national and global stories that span across systemic issues in megachurches or conspiracy theory culture. He also features regular columns on Webworm from colleagues across the journalism industry.
Webworm is powered by its subscription model for those who can pay to do so. Free members receive regular Webworm investigation emails, but a monthly or annual membership gives access to extra behind the scenes content, Farrier's more personal writing, the opportunity to be a part of the Webworm community and to take part in events. All of Farrier's public interest journalism is free to access, and Farrier also provides complimentary subscriptions for students, those on a benefit, or who are in financial hardship.
