Wow! News is a media for children aged 8 to 12, which aims to show them that there are solutions to the world's problems.
As part of the solutions journalism movement, the organisation promotes constructive journalism. Each week, it proposes an in-depth news story (the heat, the drought, the war in Ukraine, bullying at school, etc.), showcasing the people working to find solutions.
The problems and their solutions are presented in three stages: presenting the problem and explaining it, introducing someone who has an idea for a solution, and proposing actions and tips so that children can take part in solving the problem, in the form of small environmental, social or other actions.
The inspiration behind the media concept is the fact that people often feel overwhelmed by the world's problems, partly because of the way news is presented by the media. In addition to “infobesity” (i.e. information overload) and news anxiety, this can leave young people feeling powerless to face up to a frightening future. So, the founders of Wow! News decided to address children because they are only beginning to discover the world through the media. They want to show them that just as there are problems, there are also solutions. Their aim is to create an experience of being informed that will inspire these children to take action.
They are also developing a blog dedicated to parents and teachers, where they invite researchers and experts who share their values on the subject of children's wellbeing to create a forum for exchange and sharing around the media's key objectives.
